KALIYUM KATHA
A LEARNING EXPEDITION — A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE OF KOCHI
A BOARD GAME BASED ON THE LEARNINGS OF THE TRIP AND MY EXPERIENCE
The exhibition - Kaliyum Katha was a group effort of a rag-tag group of students in our foundational year of college.
The course explored the Social and Cultural practices of two locations in Kerala, one less and one more typical, juxtaposed for contrast.
The first, Alappuzha, included a fish market and two crafts: screw pine and coir. The cultural aspect of the screw pine mat production, how it is part of a lived tradition and the cultural dimensions of craft production. The various parts of the Coir making process were studied, as also its mechanisation and the economies and competition that were rendering it unviable in Kerala.
The second location, Fort Kochi, was an important centre of the spice trade, now also the venue of the Kochi Art Biennale. This location offered a great deal in terms of History, Art, Architecture and being a multicultural trade centre, a number of cultures mingled in the tiny two kilometre space.
From that, I chose to work on a board game to attempt to recreate this experience. The display, as well as the game attempts to capture the smells and flavours of this journey, it’s sounds and sights, some highs and sighs, in a visually appealing manner.

DEEPAK DAYANAND
A farmer and researcher in the Coir Industry, he introduced us to the history of Kerala and the community that practices the craft of screwpine weaving. While speaking to the community we gained an insight into their struggles with modern materials replacing ancient traditions. It left us wondering if their children would like to take up the same profession, and if they didn’t, then would a rich craft meet its end?

THANGACCHAN
Thangacchan is a farmer and Adivasi Rights Activist deeply involved with the community and vocal about his opinions. He introduced us to the women in his family who were weaving with screwpine, a mangrove hedge vegetation plant and walked us through the entire process. He also sang some songs that have been passed down orally for us along with explaining their meanings.

DEEPTI
Meet Deepti, a young owner of a three month old Korean Restaurant in Kochi, the first of its kind. She fell in love with Korean food through K-Dramas. However she wasn't able to find any in Kochi. Thus, quitting her job in a private bank, she decided to pursue her love for Korean food and hence ‘Let’s Kimchi’ was born! Do pay a visit for authentic Korean food when you are in Kochi.

A mysterious man, around 5ft
3inches, with a majestic full face beard, strangely perfect teeth and bright blue eyes, El Roy stood towering over his ‘Indo-Portuguese museum’. His presence was hard to miss. He sits at the counter and hands out tickets, yet has far more stories to tell than the museum itself.

SHINNY AUNTY
Presenting Shinny Aunty, the curator of the Catholic Art Museum in Ernakulam. Dressed in a simple traditional attire, with her hair held neatly in place with a clutch. She was walking us through the entire museum and narrating stories and answering our queries about various artefacts that the museum housed.

CHANCE AND TRANSPORT CARDS
Our main mode of transports in Kochi, Kerala, the public ferry and auto’s became our staples during the trip. We decided to bring that element to the game somehow, and made it interesting as it allowed the players to traverse the board in newer ways!
